Obama's Coattails are Working Already: Meet Bill Foster (D-IL)
Bill Foster (D-IL-14) At the risk of hopping on the Obama love-fest that is the Tufts Dems blog as of late (Tufts for Hillary, get on here!) I am thirlled to report that with Obama's help, the Democrats tonight have succeeded in capturing the House of Representatives seat in IL-14, former home to Dennis Hastert (R-Douchebag), who served as Speaker of the House during GOP's catastrophic reign from 1999 to 2007.
Democrat Bill Foster scored a clear victory -- 53% to 47% -- in what should have been an easy hold for the Republicans. Illinois' 14th Congressional District encompasses the birthplace of Ronald Reagan, and iswas reliably conservative, voting for Bush twice and giving him about 56% of the vote in 2004. It had been represented consistently by Republicans since 1939. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) poured a full one-third of its cash on-hand -- $1.2 million -- into saving the seat, and even disregarded US House rules to sound an "all hands on deck" e-alarm to house aides through the congressional e-mail servers. Still, the GOP was beaten by relatively no-name Foster.
To be fair, Foster's opponent, Jim Oberweis, ran an atrocious (though typical for a Republican) campaign. He got burned by the editorial bage of the conservative Chicago Tribune for making up fake suffering people in his campaign literature. He then tried to defend himself by retorting that "real people" are really hard to find. Yeah, especially when you try to level fake charges at people, Jim. A short snippet from the piece:
This page endorsed Bill Foster earlier this week. One reason for that decision: Oberweis has shown in four campaigns that he plays fast and loose with the truth.
By the way, using Oberweis' calculations, the Wadsworths must be paying $34,250 in taxes on their $73,000 income. And that's before the $8,905 increase. They really need a new tax accountant. Oh, that's right. They're not real.
The DCCC ran these ads against Jim Oberweis:
All told however, there was one ad in particular that was clearly the most important one of the campaign -- an enthusiastic endorsement of Foster by Illinois Senator Barack Obama. It weighed heavily on the race and contributed invaluably to Foster's victory. And not only is Foster the House's newest Representative, but he's also the Democratic Party's newest superdelegate to the DNC. He'll be more than happy to return Obama's favor come August.
