[Dems Update] chock full of Tufts Dems goodness

Submitted by Tufts Dems E-List on Thu, 04/03/2008 - 6:49am.

Hey Dems!

There is a lot of information in this email! Please read through it! Also, please come to our Alumni Reception this Friday night. Also pay careful attention to the news about the College Dems of MA Convention. It's important that we have a big showing!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Gala Help: We seek pictures for the end-of-the-year slideshow. If you took pictures at Dems events, please send them along to Maya at Maya.Karwande [at] tufts [dot] edu. Thanks!
  • Pangaea: We’re looking for someone to head up the Dems participation in Live Jumbo Aid. Live Jumbo aid has two components: a sleepout and a human rights fair. We’re looking for someone to work to coordinate both projects. If you are interested in being the Dems point person for this April 24 event, let me know! Shana.Hurley [at] tufts [dot] edu. It’s important that we show solidarity with other progressive groups on campus so please pitch in! If you have questions for Pangaea, ask Phoenix at phoenix.tso [at] gmail [dot] com.
  • ECO: Eco asked us to help register voters during Earth Fest on April 15, 16, and 17. We need two people for one hour shifts from 11:30 to 12:30 and 12:30 to 1:30. If you want to sign up, let me know. Shana.Hurley [at] gmail [dot] com
  • Softball: Will is looking to put together a softball team for this weekend. Short notice but if you’re sticking around and not going to CDM, Will could use you. Email w.ehrenfeld [at] gmail [dot] com.

CALENDAR for this busy busy week:

  • The Rundown this week, Friday April 4, will feature our very own Courtney Houston Carter to talk about the surge and the recent outbreak of violence in Basra. Should be an exercise in awesomeness! Tune in at 2:15 on the dial at 91.5 or on the WMFO website.
  • Friday, April 4 is the Tufts Dems Alumni Reception. It will be at 7:30 in Sophia Gordon. Maine State Senator Phil Bartlett will be our guest of honor. We’ll have a bar, a live jazz band, and plenty of opportunities to network! Dress nicely. If you’d like to help with set up, arrive at 6:30. Board, that is required.
  • The deadline for The Forum is Saturday, April 5. Please respect the deadline! If you have questions about writing for The Forum, email Nate at Nathan.Grubman [at] tufts [dot] edu. The general theme of the issue will be about the Democratic Party in the wake of this competitive and divisive primary. We will be releasing it on April 22 to coincide with the PA primary.
  • This weekend, Saturday April 5 and Sunday April 6, is the College Democrats of MA Convention at Boston College. On Saturday, we are leaving from Tufts by 11:30. Meet at the Campus Center. We will spend the early part of the day volunteering at caucuses nominating delegates for Obama and Hillary for the DNC Convention. In the evening, from 6-7:30, CDM will work on its constitutional convention. This is good for chapter leaders but not as necessary for everyone else. At 8 is a party – drinking liberally, if you will. On Sunday, we will be leaving from the Campus Center at 8:15 am. Please register in advance on the CDM website and remember to bring $10 for registration at the door. It is possible to leave later, missing keynote speaker Gov. Deval Patrick, and show up before elections at 2:15. More information about the specific panels and breakout sessions before the elctions can be found on the CDM website.  We have to leave early because registration is closed by 10. Please dress business casual. Mike Vastola is running for CDM president and it’s important that we give him the full 15 person voting block. (And no joke, last year it got me a date.) It is important to us that you let us know if you are coming – RSVP to Courtney at cahoustoncarter [at] gmail [dot] com.

CALENDAR for next week and beyond:
  • Do you want to have a catered lunch with the man who raised $40 million for John Kerry? The IOPC is having another roundtable discussion on Friday, April 11 at noon with former DNC Finance Chair and political science lecturer Alan Solomont. As I stressed many many times before, we NEED people to do it. If you are interested, you must RSVP. If you RSVP, you must go. If there is not enough interest, we will cancel the lunch. It was an embarrassment both to us and the Tisch College that attendance was non-existent at the last lunch. As such, we’re not playing games on this one. Sayin’.
  • Tufts Dems elections for next year will be on the April 15 meeting. Elected positions are President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Communications. Also keep in mind that many of the most prominent and important positions in Dems are appointed – Speakers, Membership, Editor in Chief of The Forum – so that there will still be many positions to come.
  • Planning for the Spring Gala is in full swing. We are sending invitees to award recipients this week. In the mean time, Maya needs your help! We’re looking for someone to make a slideshow of Tufts Dems events from this year and for someone to take care of food. If you want to help, email Maya at Maya.Karwande [at] tufts [dot] edu.

As you can see, we have a lot going on. I know this is a stressful time of year but please make a good faith effort to come to the events and participate. We really want your participation.

See you Friday night!

Shana
