RECAP If you're fired up and ready to go, this is the place to be! We had an amazing turnout at our general interest meeting this week and we hope all of you keep coming back. Thank you to all who painted the cannon Wednesday night - especially the freshmen! It looked great and was the kind of display of bipartisanship both candidates discussed at the Forum on National Service last night. We are very glad that you’ll be joining us this fall and particularly hope to see you Tuesday to help with Carl’s primary and our Tuesday meeting. Please note that all meetings will now take place in Eaton 206, not Braker 001, on Tuesdays at 9 PM. Beyond those, we have tons of great activities going on: Canvass for Carl: Carl Sciortino graduated from Tufts in 2000 and is the State Rep for our district. He is facing a tough re-election campaign. He is a great friend, resource, advocate, and provider of internships for Tufts students and we really want to support him as much as possible. Primary Day is this Tuesday, Sept. 16. Carl's campaign is looking for people to take shifts standing outside the polls giving voters last minute reminders. Contact Carl’s campaign manager and ’09 Jumbo Kevin at kevin [dot] lowndsatgmail [dot] com to sign up. PLEASE PLEASE help with this – Carl has been a huge asset to the Tufts community.   ANNOUNCEMENTS Tufts students have a series of special opportunities thanks to Professor Alan Solomont. For both sets of events, space is limited and you must RSVP to douglas [dot] footeatgmail [dot] com. - Solomont Lunches: The first: his lunch series with highly distinguished guests. All lunches are at noon in the Rabb Room at Lincoln Filene Hall. This Thursday, Sept 18 will be Ron Kaufman, White House Political Director for President George H.W. Bush. Next Thursday, Sept 25, is Dick Gephardt, former Democratic House Majority and Minority leader, Candidate for President in 1988 and 2004. - Kennedy Library events: Professors Solomont and Shattuck have gotten some extra tickets for Tufts students to attend Kennedy Library events. The first one? On Friday, Sept 19 veteran political reporters Jonathan Alter of Newsweek and Mark Halperin of Time Magazine will discuss this election in a historical context and focus on the factors that will determine who will be the 44th President of the United States. Wow. Run for freshman rep! At September 23rd meeting, there will be elections for two Freshman Rep positions. Freshman Reps get to try out work in all different areas, take on their own projects, and help decide the direction of the organization, working with the rest of the e-board. If you want to run for Freshman Rep, please prepared to the Sept 23 meeting with a brief (3-5 minute) statement about why you are running and what you can bring to the organization. Join the e-board! For members who are looking to take on a greater role in the Dems, there are plenty of opportunities available. Everyone is encouraged to apply to be on the Executive Board. In an essay of 400-500 words please state which position you would like to apply and why. Also include any qualifications or past experience you have relating to the position or with the Tufts Democrats (or politics in general). For the webmaster and Forum positions, you are encouraged to include a sample of your work. All applications should be emailed to Shana (shana [dot] hurleyattufts [dot] edu) before 6 PM on Friday, September 26. There are four positions currently open. The general expectations follow. For each, bear in mind joining the e-board requires greater attendance at an e-board meeting each week; involvement in most (if not all) Dems activities, events, and projects; and requires a more substantial time commitment. I. Social Committee Chair (Plan social events for the Tufts Democrats including parties, Boston-area outings, and debate watching events. Presence at board meetings mandatory.) II. Board Member-at-Large (Work on special projects and take control over specific events. Presence at board meetings mandatory.) III. Managing Editor of The Forum (Experience with campus publications or your college newspaper? Want to make The Forum the place for progressive commentary at Tufts? Help us out! Contact jessica [dot] abelsonattufts [dot] edu with questions). IV. Webmaster (Help us improve the functionality and content of our website, making it a resource of which we can maximize the potential.) Please also bear in mind that the general membership is expected to play a role on all three of these projects. As such, even if you’re not on the e-board, there are LOADS of opportunities to be very involved and there will be plenty of opportunities to take ownership of your own project this fall.   Want to shout from the mountains about the failure of the last 8 years? Write for The Forum, our blog, or the Campus Voices blog. If you're a more vocal person, we also have a partnership with the Tufts radio station, WMFO, and its show The Rundown in which a Dems member speaks each week about a policy issue. Stay tuned for those opportunities or contact Jessie (jessica [dot] abelsonattufts [dot] edu) for Forum-specific questions. Do you have voting questions? For general voting questions, use Senator Obama’s new site VoteforChange.com. For specific inquiries, contact Tufts Votes or Emily specifically (emily [dot] hellmanattufts [dot] edu).   STUDENTS FOR BARACK OBAMA (SFBO) Students for Barack Obama is a subgroup of the Tufts Dems focused one awesome goal – getting Senator Barack Obama elected to the presidency of the United States. They seek to educate and motivate students to understand the policy side of politics – by engaging in state and local government though working on policies that address local community needs. You work directly with State Reps or local non-profits in this remarkable hands-on opportunity. For questions, contact the IOPC folks (iopcinternshipsatgmail [dot] com) at the IOPC. Applications will be available in-person at the next Dems meeting and can be found in the attachment to this post. Senator Kerry: We also want to support Senator John Kerry who is running for re-election as well in a primary challenge for this Tuesday. Senator Kerry does another good friend of college Dems and this is one of the few times he has asked us for anything in return. If you have even just a half an hour you can do virtual phonebanking from your very own cell phone. Contact Lucy (lucy [dot] perkinsattufts [dot] edu) for the info. Congressman Markey: The campaign for our beloved Representative Ed Markey is looking for interns for the fall. Flexible schedule, unpaid.
