Putting the "Blue" in "Brown and Blue"

Speakers Committee

Submitted by Mike Vastola on Sun, 02/25/2007 - 4:04pm.

The Tufts Democrats are excited to have another great year of speakers.
This December, we are planning our third annual Issues of the Future
Symposium, an event sponsored by us to initiate dialogue on campus
about a topic we feel weighs in relevantly on the current events field.
While in the past we have held the symposium on such issues as
alternative energy and immigration policy, this year we are excited to
announce the issue to be the future of the military. This will be a
broad and challenging topic, covering issues from the Don't Ask, Don't
Tell policy to the involvement of private military contractors.
Speakers we will be inviting include former Massachusetts Congressman
Marty Meehan, former Sentator and Secretary of Defense William Cohen,
and Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs John Shalikashvili. As this
will be one of our major events of the year, we look forward to
involvement from all of our members to help pull this symposium
together.

In addition to our Issues of the Future Symposium, we will also be
inviting speakers throughout the year to present at meetings of the
Tufts Democrats, from student activists at other colleges to liasons
from presidential campaigns to local politicians running for office.
Last year we brought State Senator Pat Jehlen, Somerville Board of
Alderman candidate Marty Martinez, Congressman Ed Markey, Tufts alumn
and founder of the New Democratic Network Simon Rosenberg, and State
Representative Carl Sciortino to our events, and we look to continue
that tradition.
